Gratitude

The month of January has been all about gratitude at FITyogawoodlands. Gratitude for the opportunity to share the love of yoga with others; for my family and friends who have supported me in my journey; for my teacher and my mentor, Mario and Dave, whose knowledge and examples brought to life the true meaning of yoga. Gratitude for each of you who have given of yourselves and attended my classes, and for the blessings I have yet to realize from it all. Eucharisteo!

I recently read a beautifully written book by Ann Voskamp, One Thousand Gifts, A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are. A great read if you enjoy reading, plus the added benefit of ‘happy goosebumps’ that it will leave you feeling. It is a moving story about the profound impact that living a life of gratitude can have for each of us. She describes the process – “Charis . Grace;  Eucharisteo . Thanksgiving;  Chara . Joy;  Eucharisteo – thanksgiving – always precedes the miracle.”

How often do we hurry through life, racing past the days, missing the moments, never noticing, much less experiencing the miracles. She dares us to jot down 1,000 gratitudes. To do this requires a shift in perspective, a kind of ‘looking out’ for kindness, joy, love, and beauty. Opportunities for gratitude are everywhere if we just take notice. “It takes a full twenty minutes after your stomach is full for your brain to register satiation. How long does it take your soul to realize that your life is full? The slower the living, the greater the sense of fullness and satisfaction.”

Slow down for just a minute, grab a notepad, or your electronic device and start your own gratitude list. 1-Warm water in the shower 2-Sunset on the drive home 3- …

Studies have shown that practicing gratitude is a key component to living a happy life (something we all want), and if we can be thankful for the little things that make us smile, then we are certainly on the right path.

Hope I see you on your mat soon.

Namaste,

Sharon
