Why I Practice Yoga & Meditate
By Sharon Geib
I have spent the past 30 years working as a Certified Public Accountant and as an Executive in the finance and banking profession. I was (some might say, I still am) a high strung, type A personality who was always goal-oriented – finish the project ahead of schedule, get the next promotion, be the perfect Mom. I was rarely satisfied with ‘where I was’, more often worried about ‘what next’.
As happens to most of us as we age, life moved forward, I reached a high point in my career, became an empty nester and began wondering … ‘Is this my life?’ I certainly could not complain, I had led a blessed life, but something was missing. I wanted to leave this world a better place than before I arrived, yet I felt my actions were not in line with my heart’s desire.
My life was out of balance, and then it began to spiral … downward. Always the ‘strong’ one, I kept going, smiling on the outside and dying on the inside. I was fighting myself, refusing to accept my childhood trauma, and feeling alone in a world where no one really knew me. I went through a horrible divorce, let negativity boil over inside of me, I drank too much wine, watched too much television, and searched outside myself for something that would make me OK.
Luckily, the universe is kind and some good things happened for me during this time. I met my husband Bob, who is my very best friend in the world, and I stumbled into a yoga teacher training program. I had practiced (more aptly I had dabbled) in yoga for years before, but I did not truly understand the heart of yoga and how the mind, body, breathe connection can affect you in such beautiful and positive ways.
Today, I know that my past, both the happy and painful experiences, are part of my story. Woven together they create the fabric that is my life, they make me the person I am today, and for the first time in 50 years, I am OK with me. I have the privilege of working with kids with cancer each summer at camp, of volunteering with a non-profit organization who helps children lost in the system, and of getting to share my love of yoga and meditation with others through YogaWoodlands. This is why I am here!
I hope to see you on your mat soon.
